Kellei Baker dealing with one of many minor cuts
On the May 31st weekend BC First Aid provided First Aid services for the 2008 Sunshine Coast Rat Race. This large mountain biking cross country and down hill event turned into a very busy weekend for the attendants...
Providing on-site first aid attendant services is something that we do from time to time to support our community and help ensure safety at events such as this.
The first day of the event saw a near record number of cuts, abrasions, sprains, and other minor injuries and BC First Aid was kept busy all day with a steady flow of the cross country biking participants circulating through the first aid station. Thankfully there were no serious injuries that day and the overall event was a resounding success.
The steep downhill event on day two was a different story, as was somewhat expected, with the same continued stream of cuts and sprains but also with the added speed and jumps creating a much greater potential for more serious injuries. It was fortunate that BC First Aid was standing by on scene as a rider coming down the course, fell forward on her landing from the largest jump in the race. The race had to be postponed for scene safety while attendants assessed and stabilized the injured rider.
This world-class mountain biking event was a pleasure to attend and BC First Aid is glad that they could assist in keeping all the spectators and participants safe throughout.
