2. First Aid For Workplace

First Aid & CPR training is mandatory for some employees in the workplace. These skills and knowledge are also applicable to everyone´s daily life. This is why we teach people First Aid & CPR in easy-to-follow steps, empowering them to act on, prevent, and manage life´s emergencies. In the past this type of training was known as ´Industrial First Aid´ it is now referred to as ´Occupational First Aid´ frequently abbreviated as simply OFA.

To find out if your workplace requires these levels of certification (in British Columbia) WorkSafe BC has provided a helpful First Aid Assessment tool to assist you.

Workplace First Aid Courses are designed to provide essential skills to meet the requirements of the workplace and assist those who are interested in first aid. For those not requiring the workplace certification the community first aid certification might be a better option.

Basic Life Support

BLS [replaces HCP-CPR]

Stand-alone course - 4 hours With Airway Management - 5 hours With Oxygen Therapy - 5 hours With Airway Management and Oxygen Therapy - 6 hours Basic Life Support replaces HCP classes for health care professionals. Designed to build participant confidence in performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) skills and provide the important steps to perform a rapid assessment, perform Basic Life Support (BLS) skills, and perform rapid defibrillation. Airway Management and Oxygen Therapy can also be added as additional certifications to this course. The core class is 4 hours and an additional hour each for the Airway and Oxygen certifications. Re-certification is 2 hours

Emergency Child Care First Aid

This course provides an overview of First Aid & CPR techniques taught in an interactive environment for individuals who care for infants or children in the workplace or at home. It covers skills needed to recognize, prevent and respond to cardiovascular emergencies , CPR Level B, and other topics including choking, airway and breathing emergencies and prevention of disease transmission.

Emergency First Aid (equivalent to OFA 1) Blended

Basic first aid course offering lifesaving cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and Automated External Defibrillator (AED) skills for the workplace, community or home. Course meets legislation requirements for provincial/territorial worker safety and insurance boards and includes the latest first aid and CPR guidelines.

Emergency First Aid EFA A or EFA C

The course covers skills needed to recognize and respond to cardiovascular emergencies for adults (CPR) and topics such as choking, airway and breathing emergencies, and prevention of disease transmission.

Oxygen Administration

In this course, participants learn how to operate various oxygen delivery devices, as well as respond to and treat respiratory emergencies. The course is applicable to those who may be required to use oxygen as a first aid skill in the workplace. In-facility and health care providers including nursing, care aides, dental industry, medical offices etc.), pre-hospital care groups (fire departments, rescue teams, sports therapists, lifeguards, SCUBA divers, ski patrol, etc.). • Pulse oximetry • Supplemental oxygen • Oxygen cylinders • Oxygen regulators • Oxygen delivery devices • Administering oxygen

Standard Child Care First Aid or recert

Comprehensive First Aid & CPR training for individuals who need training for child care or early childhood education work, or who simply want more knowledge to respond to babies´ and children´s injuries and emergencies at home. The course covers a variety of topics from basic first aid such as cardiovascular emergencies, CPR Level B, choking, airway and breathing emergencies, and prevention of disease transmission to more in-depth topics such as sudden medical conditions and injuries to the head and spine.

Standard First Aid & BLS [previously SFA HCP]

Comprehensive course offering first aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR + AED) skills for individuals who require First Aid and CPR in the health care field. Meets national and regional safety legislation for the workplace. Basic Life Support is a 1 year certification while SFA is valid for 3 years. Basic Life Support replaces HCP classes for health care professionals. Designed to build participant confidence in performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) skills and provide the important steps to perform a rapid assessment, perform Basic Life Support (BLS) skills, and perform rapid defibrillation.

Standard First Aid and BLS Recert

Re-certification course offering first aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR + AED) skills for individuals who require First Aid and CPR in the health care field and hold a current Standard First Aid + BLS certification. Basic Life Support replaces HCP classes for health care professionals. Designed to build participant confidence in performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) skills and provide the important steps to perform a rapid assessment, perform Basic Life Support (BLS) skills, and perform rapid defibrillation.

Standard First Aid [previously Standard Workplace Emergency First Aid]

Worksafe BC Approved course from the Canadian Red Cross providing First Aid & CPR techniques, for individuals who require an overview for the workplace and wish to enhance those skills with additional hands-on time and practice. The course covers skills needed to recognize and respond to cardiovascular emergencies for adults (CPR) and other topics such as choking, airway and breathing emergencies and prevention of disease transmission. Previously known as Industrial First Aid. There is a Blended option of 8 hours online with 5.5 [CPR-A] or 7.5 [CPR-C] hours in class CPR

Transportation Endorsement

Transportation Endorsement is a 7 hour program designed by WorkSafeBC and is focused on developing practical skill in patient handling techniques and patient securing procedures. To qualify for a Transportation Endorsement the candidate must be at least 16 years of age and hold a valid Occupational First Aid (OFA) Level 1 or 2 certificate or equivalent. Intention Course participants are encouraged to assist in improving pre-hospital care of injured workers by promoting: Workplace compliance with the Occupational First Aid Regulation Effective interaction between attendants, employers and workers Efficient co-operation with higher levels of medical care, such as the Level 3 Occupational First Aid Attendant, BC Ambulance Service and hospital emergency personnel Certification To qualify for certification the candidate must hold a valid OFA Level 1 or 2 certificate or equivalent and must successfully complete a board-developed training course or its equivalent. Successful completion of course objectives will result in a transportation endorsement to the OFA certificate. The transportation endorsement is valid for three years as long as the candidate has a current Level 1 or 2. Safety Alert: This course is physically demanding. It will require prolonged kneeling, working in stooped positions, and rolling patients. Each class participant is required to function as attendant, helper and patient. Accommodation may be made for participants that indicate a problem with some of the aforementioned activities. Participants may be permitted to adopt "comfort" positions on the floor to avoid kneeling or stooping for prolonged periods, even though the positions may not facilitate optimum patient care. However, regardless of accommodation made during the class, participants will be required to demonstrate specific skills according to an accepted standard before certification is issued. Medical exam gloves are used during all practice sessions. Participants need to be aware of possible allergic reactions to gloves. Personal Protective Equipment ("PPE") knee pads recommended.
